Gilliland Cemetery

(Sturdivant Cemetery)

 

When I was young, my father, Hugh Gilliland, was a wheat farmer and my mother, Florence, was a teacher. Vacation was the week between harvest and the beginning of school.  We would spend that week each year at Lehman Hot Springs located about 18 miles east of Ukiah, Oregon. 

The cost to rent a cabin for a week was $35.00 and that included swimming for the entire family.

 

As we rounded Battle Mountain and crossed the Camas Prairie,  Dad would point to a log cabin on the back of the French place and remind us that our grandfather, Lewis, was born there.  

We later learned there was a cemetery, located on the brow of a hill behind the cabin, in which our g-g-grandfather was buried.  

 
 

Last summer, July of 1997, I finally climbed that hill.  It was so peaceful and beautiful up there that it was truly difficult to leave.  The cemetery has been fenced twice, in 1908 and again in 1940. Ownership of the cemetery has changed several times and left the family years ago.   Each owner has maintained the fence and the cemetery is in remarkable condition.
